Après Ski on a Budget: Tips for Saving Money

Après ski. The very words conjure images of fur-lined boots, clinking champagne flutes and a fire roaring in a stone hearth. It’s a world of excess, a playground for the wealthy. Or is it? With a little know-how, you can experience the après ski life without maxing out your credit card. Affordable après ski is an art and with a little bit of planning and some know how, you'll have the bougie ditching their Dom P for cheap beer and wanting to hang with you in no time.

Understanding Après Ski on a Budget

Let’s get real. Après ski isn't all about popping bubbly and eating fancy food (although sometimes that is always nice). It’s a cultural phenomenon. It's a ritual as old as the mountains themselves. It’s about good times, good food and good people. And while the rich and famous might splash around in the Veuve tent, the rest of us can still enjoy the festivities without having to remortgage our house.

Tips for Saving Money on Après Ski

  1. Choose the Right Resort

Not all ski resorts are created equal. Some resorts like Aspen are known for their extravagant après ski scene, while others like many of those on the Indy Pass, offer a more laid-back, budget-friendly experience. Consider smaller, less-crowded resorts like Magic Mountain in Vermont or Whitefish Mountain Resort in Montana, where you can find excellent skiing and more affordable après ski options.

  1. Timing is Key

Coyote Cafe Beaver Creek

Timing is everything when it comes to saving money on après ski. Many bars and restaurants offer happy hour specials, discounted drink prices and food deals. Believe it or not, one of my least expensive après ski tabs came at The Coyote Cafe in the super chic Beaver Creek. Why? Their happy hour specials were off the charts (see the sign in the image). So, no matter where you are, plan your activities around these times to maximize your savings.

      3. DIY Après Ski

Instead of spending money at a bar or restaurant, consider hosting your own après ski gathering in your accommodation or at a tailgate. If you are renting an AirBnB, plan ahead of time, shop at home or at a grocery store on the way to your accommodations. Doing so will save you an exponential amount of money. Then you will have items on hand to prepare simple snacks like cheese and charcuterie boards, or cook a hearty meal to share with friends.

       4. Smart Food and Beverage Choices

When dining out, opt for affordable food options like soups, salads or shared plates. Many après ski venues offer delicious and reasonably priced dishes. For instance, when we are at The Foggy Goggle, we often order the plate of nachos. This man-holed sized order of nachos is enough for a table of and in most cases you may not have to order anything else. Pizza is also a very budget friendly option for larger parties who can get away with sharing a few pies at a fraction of the price of everyone ordering their own meal.

The same goes for you alcoholic beverage choices. Drinking responsibly and strategically can help you save a lot  money. Opt for lesser expensive, but still tasty, beer options like IC Light when at the aforementioned Foggy Goggle. And, pace yourself by alternating alcoholic drinks with water. Both you and your wallet will thank me the next day.

  1. Free Après Ski Activities

Not all après ski activities require spending money. Many resorts offer free live music and bonfires. Or, bring a small card game to keep the fun going at your table. You can also enjoy free activities like ice skating or simply strolling through the town.

Enjoying the World of Affordable Après Ski

The secret to affordable après ski isn’t rocket science. It’s about savoring the moment, embracing the camaraderie and maybe even a little bit of frugal finesse. Remember, the best après ski experiences aren’t always the most expensive. Sometimes, the most memorable moments happen around a campfire, a cold beer and good company.
