Sun Valley Ski Resort was voted the number 1 ski resort by Ski Magazine in 2020/2021 for good reason. The skiing there is legit, especially on Bald mountain when the snow is good. Good skiing deserves après ski its equal and Sun Valley has plenty of that too. Whether on the mountain or in the nearby town of Ketchum there are plenty of places to play when the lifts stop spinning. Beyond great skiing and elevated après-ski, Sun Valley is also one of the most family friendly resorts in North America.

Open Air Market and Cookie Decorating in Sun Valley Village

Cookie Decorating at Sun Valley Resort

Family friendly is what it's all about this holiday season as Sun Valley Resort announced the return of its popular Winter Wonderland Festival. With a line up including the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, an Open Air Holiday Market, and Christmas Eve Ice Show with Torchlight Parade and fireworks it is the ultimate way celebrate the holiday ski season at Sun Valley Resort.

The Winter Wonderland Festival kicks off this weekend at Sun Valley Resort (December 11-12) with a variety of activities the whole family can enjoy. Always a fan favorite, the Open Air Holiday Market will fill the Sun Valley Village with local artisans selling their creation.

While the parents shop, children can head over to the Boiler Room and decorate their own cookie kits (available for purchase for $19.50). Once finished, the whole family can enjoy a scavenger hunt in the Village shops throughout the holiday season by picking up a card at the Guest Center.

When the Sun Goes Down, the Tree Lights Up

Sun Valley Resort Tree Lighting

When the sun goes down Saturday, December 11, it's time for the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in the Village right in front of the duck pond. Christmas tunes will fill the air beginning at 5:30 p.m. as you sip complimentary hot chocolate and fill your belly with yummy cookies. There's also a cash bar just in case the adults want to indulge in some treats of the liquid variety. I recommend adding a shot of peppermint Schnapps to your hot chocolate for a nice seasonal touch.

The tree lights up the night at 6 and you might just Santa may be seen strolling around the Resort. Feel free to take pics but don't get too close, we don't want the big guy to get Covid before the big night.

Shopping and Ice Show Support Good Causes

Visitors to the Sun Valley Village on Saturday, December 18th will enjoy live ice carving demonstrations while strolling and shopping. On December 18th & 19th, shoppers at select stores in the Village including the Brass Ranch, Pete Lane’s, Signatures, and the Lodge Gift Shop can take care of everything on their holiday list while supporting local nonprofits in the community with the “Shop for a Cause” days. A percentage of all purchases will support the Environmental Resource Center, 43 North, and Girls on the Run in the Wood River Valley.

The Annual Christmas Eve Ice Show also returns this year with members of the local skating community performing to music ranging from Christmas classics and modern favorites complete with a performance from the beloved Sun Valley Carolers. The Sun Valley Carolers begin their evening performances on December 21st throughout the Village through December 28th.
Tickets are on sale now and will be available on a first come first serve basis for $10 per person. All proceeds from the event will be donated to our community food center, the Hunger Coalition and the I Have A Dream Foundation which supports the educational success of underserved children.
Sun Valley Torchlight Parade and fireworks
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring back this magical tradition on Christmas Eve for our community and support two important local charities in the process” said Pete Sonntag, Sun Valley Resort’s Vice President and General Manager.
Immediately following the Ice Show, the torchlight parade will wind down Dollar Mountain. The evening’s festivities will culminate in a grand finale of fireworks which can be viewed from the Village, Ice Rink area, or the Pavilion Lot.

Add to The Holiday Cheer With the Best Après Ski Gear

This holiday season give the gift of après ski to your friends and family. Our après ski clothing is designed to be functional and fun, like our If You Don't Après Ski Hoodie. Layer it underneath your jacket to stay comfortable and warm on the mountain. Then when you ditch your jacket at the bar, it's sure to turn heads après ski.
